Sources

English Wiktionary contributors, via the Kaikki.org Latin extraction , downloaded 11 October 2026. Definitions and source examples are adapted under CC BY-SA 4.0. Each CSV entry includes its Wiktionary page URL in the source column. Inflected-form and alternative-form entries were filtered before selection.

Selection and levels

Eligible entries were prioritized using Kyle P. Johnson’s 2015 CLTK Classical Latin lemma frequencies . Automated lemma counts are imperfect. Dictionary entries outside that frequency list extend the collection to 10,000; these are not all frequent Classical words. The grammar focuses on Classical Latin, while vocabulary can include later usage. The labels Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced are approximate study groupings, not CEFR certification.

This is not an exact official top-10,000 popularity ranking.

Examples

764 examples are adapted from Wiktionary, 30 are original core examples, and 9,206 are constructed practice sentences. Constructed examples reuse a small set of grammatical patterns, such as writing about a noun or describing something with an adjective. They are labelled “Practice example” in vocabulary and are not quotations from a corpus. Latin construction uses supplied inflected forms; Persian construction uses standard written patterns.

Some source examples are short phrases rather than full sentences. Examples illustrate the selected meaning; translations are contextual rather than word-for-word.

Review

Required fields, unique IDs, headwords, translated examples, quiz options and session selection are checked automatically. French and Russian spellings were screened with official LibreOffice dictionaries and spylls; those development tools are not included. Targeted corrections do not constitute an independent line-by-line review by a language teacher. Definitions, classifications and examples may still need correction. Full plural and conjugation tables are not supplied.

Script and pronunciation

Search accepts words without macrons. Dictionary headwords may omit macrons even where examples show them. A Latin voice must be installed for browser pronunciation; an Italian voice is not substituted.

Pronunciation includes a built-in synthetic voice; installed device voices are optional. No human recordings are supplied.
